SCION (Scalability, Control, and Isolation On Next-Generation Networks) represents a fundamental advancement in existing network technologies. Originally developed at ETH Zurich, SCION offers significant advantages over conventional network architectures. The SCION Cloud now offers these advantages natively in the cloud.
From a connectivity perspective, SCION will permanently change the landscape of critical infrastructure sector by sector with its clean slate approach. At the same time, we are seeing a cross-industry, tactical withdrawal of sensitive data from global cloud architectures back to sovereign cloud solutions. The SCION Cloud successfully meets the resulting requirements with a combined solution. Companies can securely connect their critical infrastructures and benefit from increased security, scalability, and redundancy.
Finance: Secure Swiss Finance Network (SSFN).
With the scheduled shutdown of Finance IPNet, the previous Swiss financial network, at the end of September 2024, SIX has effectively accelerated the migration to a more secure and cost-efficient architecture for SIC/euroSIC. Many banks and financial service providers are now benefiting from the new network technology. With SCION, participants can establish connections that are not only secure but also flexible – they can decide which partners to connect to and which paths to use for data transmission. Once redundant leased lines are consistently phased out, this flexibility also offers enormous potential for cost savings and simplifies the management of the network infrastructure.
FinTechs already have the opportunity to reap the benefits of SCION cloud native from the SCION Cloud.
Health: Secure Swiss Health Network (SSHN).
There is also a growing need for secure cloud solutions in the healthcare sector, and the SCION Cloud is already being used here too. Medical facilities such as doctors' offices, pharmacies, and hospitals can access scalable hosted applications in the SCION Cloud securely and in full compliance. Two options are available for connecting to the cloud: Larger facilities use Cyberlink's Managed SCION Edge, which meets the highest security standards. Smaller participants can use the “Anapaya Gate,” which offers a practical and cost-effective solution for less critical applications. This gives all participants protected access to sensitive data and a wide range of healthcare applications.
The SCION Cloud is not only a competitive alternative to conventional architectures, but also enables compliance-sensitive industries in particular to reliably protect data and better control and optimize the performance and availability of their applications. The SCION Cloud also offers new perspectives for the public sector and energy suppliers, which also have high requirements for network security and data control.
